Harvesting Lavender

lavender Harvest

Late July and early August mornings, you’ll often see us out in the field when the sun comes up. We start harvest early in the morning to try and finish the day before the heat peaks in the afternoon.

All of our lavender is harvested by hand using a small scythe tool. The lavender is cut and bundled together with rubber bands. Often we will let the bundles soak up a bit of sun to ensure that the morning dew has evaporated.

We make our floral bundles right in the field, so they can dry untouched and retain their shape. All of the bundles are hung upside down in our garage or pump house where it’s dark and warm. We use dehumidifiers to make sure we keep extra moisture out and the buds dry completely.

Because we have limited drying space, our harvest typically occurs over a three week period to allow the lavender to dry in between harvest days.

Once dry, the floral bundles are wrapped in tissue and stored until they are displayed in the store or sold to our phone and internet customers. The bundles that have been dried for sachets or culinary are debudded using a simple machine that helps loosen the buds off the stalks. We screen the lavender to remove large stems and leaves before it is cleaned to bring you the finest lavender products.
