Time to Prune LavenderNov 01, 2009 - Fall is in full swing and that means it's time to prune your lavender plants. To keep your plants healthy and compact, pruning every year is a must. The main reasons we prune any plant is to give it shape and to let in more air and light. Your lavender plants will benefit from both. Pruning is easy. If you look at your plant, you will see all lavender grows on a woody base. You don't want to cut into that base, but cut about an inch above it. If you follow the natural shape of the plant, you will get those nice little rounded mounds that create a great geometric structure for the winter landscape. I've found that battery powered grass trimmers and hedge trimmers both work well for this task. In the Pacific Northwest, we've had some beautiful warm and sunny fall days. So, if you visit over the next few weeks you're likely to see me out in the field pruning, so I know I'll have lush plants and a bountiful harvest next year. |
