Home From the Lavender Conference

Oct 20, 2008 -

I'm back in the office after an information packed weekend at the 4th North American Lavender Conference.  Although the conference was held right here in Sequim, it feels like I've been gone for awhile.  The conference is held every two years or so, and is produced by our Sequim Lavender Growers Association.  We bring speakers in from all over the world to share their knowledge of how to grow, propagate, use and market this remarkable herb.

This year's keynote speaker was Paul Abbott, Owner of Isle of Wight Lavender in England.  He gave me some great new ideas on ways to propagate lavender.  If they work for me, it will be an easier process, so I'm looking forward to trying them.  I also got some great new marketing ideas and learned a lot more about regulations in the cosmetic industry.  We had attendees from all over the country, and it was very nice to meet other people who are in the business or thinking about starting farms.

Even though I live with lavender and my products everyday, it is always good to get more information about ways I can develop my plants and my products to bring the very best quality to my customers.  I love learning new things, so I thrive on opportunities to get re-energized and think about things a different way.

I'll be mulling over some of these ideas while I finish my pruning and experiment with these new propagating techniques.  The weather is already getting frosty, so my goal is to finish the majority of my outside work over the next two weeks.  Then I'll focus on some new product ideas, so stay tuned.
