Summer Afternoons on a Lavender Farm

Aug 11, 2008 -

One of my favorite things about living on a lavender farm is August afternoons.  On sunny days in between harvest cycles, I like to sit outside by the field and make lavender wands and baskets.  Making lavender wands is an old tradition.  They can only be made when the lavender is fresh and you can bend the stems back over the flower spikes.  Weaving ribbon through the stems keeps the flowers inside and gives you a beautiful sachet.  Lavender baskets are made the same way except you only weave about halfway down the flower spikes, so you can still see the flowers.  Carefully selected stems are bent into handles, and the baskets are finished off with ribbon bows.  They make delightful Christmas ornaments.

We've had the luxury of making wands and baskets the past few days.  Last week we harvested on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.  We were able to harvest for our Grosso floral bundles and sachet buds.  So, I will have bundles in stock again soon.  I did leave a row of Grosso in the field, because we like it for crafts, u-pick and it still looks gorgeous.  It looks like we'll finish up most of our harvest over this weekend and at the beginning of next week.  I like to leave the Sample Garden in tact as long as I can, but it will have to go fairly soon too.
