When will the lavender be in bloom?

Jun 17, 2008 -

One of the most commonly asked questions at the farm this time of year is when will the lavender be blooming?

Of course the exact timing is always weather dependent, but in spite of our unusually cold spring, I am beginning to see a lot of color on some of my L. angustifolia plants.  Because we grow so many different types of lavender at Lost Mountain Lavender, we have a pretty long bloom season.  My spanish lavenders or L. stoechas have been in bloom for a couple of weeks.  That's part of what makes them such great landscape plants.  They bloom early and will continue putting on a show all summer.

Out in the main field, I am definitely seeing color on the Seal's Seven Oaks, Folgate, Tucker's Early and Munstead varieties.  All are L.angustiofolias and are usually the first rows that I can open up for U-pick.  Typically this is sometime around the end of June.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed for some warm days and we should be right on time.

The L.x intermedia bloom a bit later.  That usually puts them in full bloom during the Lavender Festival the third weekend in July.  Lavender will be in bloom and available for U-pick until we finish up our harvest around the middle of August.

We hope you can visit this summer and enjoy the beautiful sight and smells of the lavender in bloom!
